Originally founded in 1965 to “to educate, study, collect and preserve historical records and antiquities relating to the history of Southborough… and to interest and unite the townspeople through programming that reveals the history of our town and its neighboring communities,” the Southborough Historical Society’s mission has evolved over six decades. In line with current academic practice that advocates a far more holistic approach to our understanding of the past, the Society realizes that historical study is a single component in the broader, tightly interwoven family of the humanities. Therefore, we have undertaken a greatly expanded mission with the opening of our new History and Arts center at Fayville: to educate our population—from youths to seniors—in the fullest possible range of arts and humanities with the goal of helping to create the culturally and historically informed citizenry so essential to the proper functioning of our democracy.
